Songwriting Contests

Many organizations sponsor songwriting contests. Some of them can launch careers, some can't - it's caveat emptor here before you mail off your entry fee. Prizes can range from bragging rights to thousands of dollars; we'll list all the available contests as we find them, with available information on prizes and fees.

Dallas Songwriter's Association 8 categories; category prizes are $100 cash or 5 hours of studio time ($50 cash for 2nd place); grand prize winner gets merchandise - this year it included a Les Paul.
Got What It Takes 8 categories for original music, 7 for cover performances. $10,000 grand prizes for originals and covers. $30 entry for 1st song, $25 for additional. Accepts entries online with mp3 files.
Great American Song Contest 9 categories; grand prize is $500 cash plus merchandise and gift certificates valued at over $1700. $25 entry for the first two songs, $20 for any additional songs.
International Songwriting Competition Grand prize $10,000 in cash and $30,000 in merchandise. 16 categories. $30 entry fee.
John Lennon Songwriting Contest 2005 prizes not yet announced; the 2004 grand prize was $20,000. 13 catetgories, $30 entry fee.
Michigan Songwriting Contest Open to current and former Michigan residents. 13 categories, $1,000 grand prize, $25 entry fee ($20 per song for 5 or more)
Positive Pop For songs with a positive theme. Grand prize of merchandise/services worth about $4700. Entry fee $25.
Songs Inspired by Literature Contest 10 winners per year. No information on any fees or prizes, but winnerrs go on a compilation CD.
USA Songwriting Competition Grand prize in merchandise and cash worth over $50,000. 15 categories, $30 entry fee.
